Nehilet Blackman launches debut solo album, signs record deal
Nehilet Blackman is carrying on the Blackman name with her debut solo album, "Legacy".
The gospel singer launched the album on Sunday at Jenny's in Port of Spain. "Legacy" is a seven-track album which consists of pre-released tracks, as well as two new songs with Barbadian gospel singer, Sherry Ann Maughan, one new track as well as a remix of Ras Shorty I's song, "Sweet Music". She has also recently signed a distribution deal with R&R records which is linked with Universal Records and Tuff Gong Records.
Speaking with Loop, Nehilet expressed her excitement over her new album and record deal. "I'm really excited to see what the future holds not just for myself but for my band as well."
With her family considered to be music royalty in Trinidad and Tobago, Nehilet is one of the most selfless artists in the industry, committed to doing her part to usher in the new school of talented artists. She has had two girl groups under her belt, the first of which is now called Aixa Nation, and the second (and current) band called Lights.

As a result, she admitted to feeling slightly guilty for working on her first solo album. It was her manager, Jamie Thomas, a major figurehead in the gospel industry who also serves as programme director at W107.1FM and CEO of Kingdom Works Entertainment, who advised her that the time had come to focus on her solo career to have better grounding to help other artists. " I am extremely elated about it, but for a long time, I’ve felt guilty trying to work on putting out my solo album knowing that there are so many talented artists out there.
"Jamie told me that you have to be able to establish yourself before you can help others. My plan is to establish my name and brand with the help of Jamie Thomas and keep pushing forward to a new height, not just for myself but for all the young girls, musicians and new artists. My heart is for them...the talent is just there."
Look out for "Legacy" which will soon become available on all digital streaming platforms including Apple Music and Spotify.
