New Chief of Defence Staff replaces Major General Rodney Smart

The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) has been appointed a new Chief of Defence Staff.

Captain Hayden Pritchard has been promoted to the rank of Commodore and was appointed Chief of Defence Staff by acting President Christine Kangaloo, effective Wednesday, August 09.

Captain Pritchard has 32 years’ service in the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force.

Colonel Archilus L.N. Phillips, who has 34 years’ service in the TTDF, has been promoted to Brigadier General and appointed Vice Chief of Defence Staff effective July 26.

The present Chief of Defence Staff Major General Rodney A. Smart has been promoted to the rank of Major General and will proceed on retirement from August 09, 2017.

The men were presented with their instruments of promotion and appointment on Tuesday by National Security Minister Edmund Dillon, at a ceremony held at the Ministry of National Security.

During his address, Minister Dillon noted that the occasion was one of pride and historic significance for the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force as Captain Pritchard will be the third Coast Guardsman to attain the appointment of Chief of Defence Staff, the last Commodore having been appointed to Chief of Defence Staff 17 years ago.

Minister Dillon further thanked Major General Smart for his yeoman service to Trinidad and Tobago over his 36 years in the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and extended best wishes to Commodore Pritchard and Brigadier General Phillips in their new roles.
