The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine Campus recently announced its 2019/2020 Guild of Students Council. The new council, led by President Justin Subero, was elected by the student body in March 2019 and officially assumed office on June 1.

He succeeds Darrion Narine.

In 1962, The Guild of Undergraduates of The UWI was endorsed by the Royal Charter which was given to UWI when it gained independence from the University of London. The Guild represents the interests and welfare of the student population, helping their transition to campus life, encouraging integration among students and forming a bridge between students and the University administration.

Members of this council sit on the University’s planning, finance, and academic committees and attend regional meetings on behalf of the students.

Enrolled students at  UWI all pay guild fees that in turn fund the student council’s activities. The Guild also plans many activities throughout the year geared toward promoting student integration and keeping campus spirit alive. These include Guild Fest, Inter-faculty Games, Campus Carnival, town hall meetings, Caribbean Integration Week, hall concerts, sports days, Entrepreneurial Expo and talent programmes.

“I want students to understand the importance of the Guild and the work that we do,” Subero said. “We represent them at very high-level committees and boards. My plan is to bring back a proper framework and structure for the Guild. I think that has been lacking for the last couple of years.”

In addition to the executive, the Guild also comprises hall chairpersons, faculty representatives and special committee chairpersons, such as national and international affairs, student activities, post-graduate and part-time and evening committees.
