The North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) said there is no obligation to automatically renew contracts for medical officers employed at its facilities.

In a statement issued August 2, the NWRHA aid that the High Court of Trinidad and Tobago recenty ruled in favour of the NWRHA, endorsing the Authority’s position that specialist medical officers are not guaranteed automatic renewals of their contracts of employment, whether by reference to past performance or an appraisal of past performance.

The court further ruled that there is no policy to treat past performance or an appraisal of past performance as imposing upon the Authority an obligation to rehire the person appraised.

Additionally, The NWRHA said the court found that there was no evidence to satisfy the court that the Ministry of Health was involved or intervened in the decision-making process of the NWRHA with regard to the non-renewal of the claimant’s contract of employment.

The NWRHA said it remains committed to fair, equitable and non-discriminatory hiring practices.
