OAS calls for peace in Guyana after Regional and General Elections
The Organization of American States (OAS) Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to the General and Regional Elections in Guyana has condemned acts of violence that took place, yesterday, at the office of the Region 4 Returning Officer.
In a statement, the EOM said: “Such actions have no place in any electoral process.”
The Mission said it was present during efforts to review and verify the Statements of Poll in Region 4.
They said while a result was reached, it “did not reach its proper conclusion as stipulated in the electoral code and that, subsequently, the results published by GECOM do not meet the established standards.”
The EOM is calling for a peaceful resolution of the impasse as it noted legal remedies pursued by the opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) were unsuccessful.
They have also called on citizens to remain calm and for “political stakeholders to respect the electoral process as prescribed in Guyana’s legislation.”
