Officers threatened, assaulted during J'ouvert celebrations

Two police officers were forced to seek medical treatment after they were assaulted by a suspect while trying to make an arrest in Rio Claro on Carnival Monday morning.

According to police reports, at about 10:40 am on Monday, J’ouvert celebrations were in progress along the Tabaquite Road, Rio Claro, when PC Charles attempted to arrest a 20-year-old man on an outstanding warrant.

However, the suspect, from Cushe Village, Rio Claro, resisted the arrest.

PC Jaikaran and PC Mehigoo, who were nearby at the time, rendered assistance, during which the suspect allegedly became violent and assaulted the officers in the execution of their duty.

The 20-year-old was eventually subdued, and the suspect, police said even made threats to kill PC Charles.

However, during the fracas, two of the officers suffered injuries which forced them to seek medical treatment at the Rio Claro Police Station.

PC Jaikaran suffered abrasions to the nose, and musculoskeletal bruises to the left knee, while PC Meighoo suffered musculoskeletal pain and abrasions to both hands.

Sgt Maharaj is continuing inquiries.
