One arrested following shooting on Nelson Street

One man is in custody after he allegedly opened fire near police officers in East Port of Spain on Saturday afternoon.

According to reports, around 2.20 pm PC Bachus and WPC Bonnet of the Besson Street Ops Unit were on foot patrol heading south along Nelson Street when they heard loud explosions.

They observed a man standing along Nelson Street, holding what appeared to be a firearm. Officers believed he was firing the firearm in a northerly direction along the street.

The officers took cover behind a vehicle, then saw the suspect running towards Calvary Hill, attempting to escape.

Besson Street Ops Unit and the Inter-Agency Task Force responded and one suspect was detained and is being processed by crime scene personnel.

No one was injured in the incident.
