One injured in confrontation with police after robbery

One man is hospitalised while three others are in custody following a confrontation with police in Sangre Grande on Thursday night.

According to police reports, around 8:45 pm on Thursday, a 72-year-old man was at his home along Mohamed Drive, Sangre Grande, when four armed men stormed the premises.

They then proceeded to assault the elderly man before relieving him of $11,000 in cash he had at the home.

The four assailants then fled the scene.

The police were notified and an all points bulletin was issued.

A team of officers led by PC Sankar and WPC Solomon intercepted a vehicle along the Toco Main Road.

There was said to be a confrontation between the police and the bandits during which one of the assailants was shot.

The other three men surrendered without incident.

When the vehicle was searched, it was discovered that the men had hammers in their hands.

No firearms were found.

The cash was seized and recovered.

The wounded man was rushed to the Sangre Grande District Hospital where he was treated, while the other three suspects are said to be aiding investigators with their inquiries.

One of the suspects, Loop was told, is believed to be related to the elderly man.
