Opposition accused of spreading fake news on kidnapping
The People’s National Movement (PNM) is condemning ‘irresponsible’ statements made by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, surrounding the alleged kidnapping of a businessman's daughter.
Persad-Bissessar made the statement during her address at the United National Congress’s (UNC) Monday night forum in Couva where she revealed that she received a text message which said that the daughter of a San Fernando businessman was taken against her will.
The PNM, in a statement, accused Persad-Bissessar of stirring up trouble to gain political points.
It said, “This action on the part of Ms. Persad-Bissessar was calculated to cause unnecessary panic which is condemned. The UNC’s continued fear mongering should be rejected by the population as they, the UNC, are on a destructive path as opposed to working towards being part of the solution.”
The statement also noted that the Police Service denied receiving a report of any kidnapping on the night of Monday, July 3.
The PNM also sought to congratulate the TTPS for its quick apprehension of seven people accused of the recent kidnapping of Puff N Stuff owner Gregory Laing, who was abducted outside his business place on June 29.
A $250,000 ransom was demanded and he was released after it was paid.
The PNM stated that the party stands ready to continue supporting the law enforcement authorities in combatting the scourge of crime that destroys the social fabric of our great nation.
