Over 150 schools to undergo repairs during July/August Vacation

A total of 151 Primary and Secondary Schools have been identified thus far to undergo repairs during the July/August Vacation.

This was revealed by Education Minister Anthony Garcia who was speaking following a meeting held on Friday, June 23, to discuss a partnership with Regional Corporations to perform this year's School Vacation Repairs Programme (SVRP).

Minister Garcia and Rural Development and Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein lead the discussions as part of the implementation of Local Government Reform.

The Corporations were represented by Mayors, Chairmen, Councillors and Chief Executive Officers of the respective Regional Corporations.

According to Minister Garcia, there was the general consensus that school repairs should occur before the beginning of the new academic year in September, to ensure that all children have “easy access” to their education.

The Education Minister further expressed hope in the partnership between the two Ministries and the Regional Corporations as communities will now be involved in all aspects of education which includes school repairs.

He believes the hiring of local talent in various communities would be beneficial to all stakeholders.

“We are looking at targeting local contractors who reside in the particular Regional Corporations to do the necessary work and we are hoping that this will bring a large enough success and in fact, it will instil pride in the work that is to be done because the contractors will reside in the communities.”

Minister Garcia said the meeting was instructive adding that the responses of members of the regional corporations were “most encouraging.”
