Parents reminded: School in session on Ash Wednesday

Education Minister Anthony Garcia has issued a reminder to parents that school continues as usual on Ash Wednesday.

The Minister on Friday appealed to parents to ensure that their children attend school following Carnival celebrations next Monday and Tuesday.

According to statistics from the Ministry, 2019 student attendance was 19 percent at secondary schools and 31 percent at the primary school level.

Teacher attendance, in comparison, was 82 percent at the primary school level and 76 percent in secondary schools.

“Our teachers are committed and we need this level of commitment from our parents,” the Minister said.

He made it clear that student attendance is mandatory.

“The Ministry of Education is seeking to enforce discipline in our students. Our schools are a microcosm of society and the same way that the rest of the country returns to normal when Carnival ends, so too must our schools. Therefore, the expectation is that schools inclusive of student populations will return to normal.”
