Police have charged a 24-year-old man from Penal for wasting police time by making a false report of kidnapping.

Shane Ramjattan, of Julien Branch Trace, Rochard Road, Penal, was charged on Monday.

He was reported missing by relatives five days earlier.

On January 18, he went to the Barrackpore Police Station and told officers that he had been kidnapped from Penal three days prior.

He claimed he was beaten and taken to a forested area where he was forced to clean weapons and pack drugs by his kidnappers before being released.

A subsequent investigation found several irregularities in his report.

He was eventually charged for wasteful employment of police time.

Ramjattan is due to appear before a Rio Claro Magistrate today.
