Petrotrin cleans up accidental spill at Pointe-a-Pierre refinery

Petrotrin is at this time working to contain a spill after approximately 20,000 gallons of bunker fuel were accidentally released at its Point-a-Pierre refinery.

The State-owned company says the spill, which occurred yesterday afternoon, is due to the rupture of a storage tank.

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA), who has been in contact with Petrotrin officials and alerted the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) to the situation requested that the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan (NOSCP) be activated given the estimated volume of the hydrocarbon release.

The EMA says it will provide further updates following consultation with Petrotrin, the Ministry, and site inspection reports from the EMA's Emergency Response and Investigations (ERI) team.
