Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley mourned the death of Tobagonian John Mills and his wife Euline John, both of whom were found dead at their home on Thursday.
Dr Rowley said Mills, who celebrated his 69th birthday on Wednesday, had been a fellow classmate at Bishop's High School in Tobago.
Dr Rowley lamented the crime situation in the country after sharing a photo showing the two at a school reunion.
"With my classmate and buddy John "Joker" Mills at our Alma Mater Bishop's High School reunion last year.
"John and his wife were brutally slain by an intruder in their bedroom on Wednesday night in Tobago. What have we become? What are we producing as "the next generation"?"
"John and I grew up together in poverty, with pride, but violence and criminality were never part of our life."
"Instead we shared lunch money and loved one another as we worked hard in the classroom and competed fiercely on the sports fields, honouring our parents, neighbours and respecting all adults," he said.
According to media reports, Mills and his common-law wife Euline John, 61, both of Cocrico Avenue, Buccoo, were both found dead at their home on Thursday.
The elderly couple had been bound and initial reports indicated visible signs of violence.
LoopTT was told that Mills celebrated his 69th birthday on Wednesday, and had friends over for a lime on Wednesday night.
The news has shocked the Tobago community; the 2019 murder toll for Tobago now stands at five.
Investigations are continuing.
