PM: Review, restructure planned for ODPM
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said a review and restructure of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) is 'imminent'.
Speaking during a tour of the flood-stricken Mafeking Village, Mayaro, on Sunday, Dr Rowley listened to the concerns of residents in the area.
"I know there's a lot of finger pointing and blame taking place, but that is par for the course. The government will take very firm action to review the ODPM and ensure that we have the personnel who have the attitude and the aptitude to handle a situation (like this)."
"I'm convinced that we don't have the correct personnel in there and we are not prepared to respond. We had adequate notice for this development and we ought not to be blaming it on communications. This is the age of cellphones. We really need to do better than that," he said.
He added that the Ministry of Social Development would be visiting residents to see what grants they would be eligible for, and that teams from the regional corporations would continue to provide aid.
He was accompanied by Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan, Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Kazim Hosein, Minister of Agriculture, LAnds and Fisheries, Clarence Rambharat, and others.
The convoy also included members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, the ODPM, Regional Corporations, and others.
