Police call for public assistance as rifle shots ring out in Aranguez

North Eastern Division police are calling for the public’s assistance, after volleys of gunshots were heard in the Aranguez community on Wednesday night.

The gunshots, police were told, were heard at about 9.15pm and went on for about five minutes, and sounded like automatic fire. However, when officers responded, they did not observe anything amiss.

Checks were made for injuries at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, as well as the Port of Spain General Hospital, but no one had been admitted at that time for any wounds.

Police exercises are expected to intensify in the community as a result.

On Monday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayson Forde called on the public’s assistance in locating high powered rifles, as he noted there had been a huge increase in such weapons in 2019 with 44 AR15s and AK47s being seized.

This was a stark increase from the previous year when only 13 such weapons had been seized.

Anyone with information which could aid police in their operations is asked to contact the Barataria Police Station, or any police station nearest to them. Information can also be given anonymously by persons calling 555 or 800-TIPS, or by texting 482-GARY. The intelligence could also be given via the TTPS App.
