A search for an estimated 150 Venezuelan nationals who may have entered the country illegally is currently underway.

This is of paramount importance to officers of the South Western Division, as it was noted that in Venezuela there are now over 10,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The search, Loop News was told, has been ongoing since Tuesday morning, after police first received intelligence that a group of persons had come into the country at Beach Road, in Santa Flora.

However, when police arrived at the scene, they did not find anyone. Police were told that the group had been taken away in vehicles which had been waiting at the shoreline.

They were given descriptions of the cars used and at about 11 am, officers were able to intercept one car along the SS Erin Road in Siparia being driven by a Trinidadian national. In the car, police found and detained four men, three women, and a minor.

These eight were handed over to officials at the Coast Guard, while the driver, who is from Central Trinidad, was taken in for questioning.
