Police officer shot by mentally ill man
A Police Constable was hospitalised after a mentally ill man somehow got his hands on the officer’s firearm and shot him.
LoopTT was told that at around 6.30 pm, two police officers were responding to a call for assistance at Solomon Street, Cedar Village, Princes Town to secure a 36-year-old man who is a patient of the St Ann’s Hospital.
Upon arrival, the officers attempted to detain the individual, during which a struggle ensued with one of the officers and the patient. During the struggle, the patient managed to grab the officer’s firearm and shot at him.
The other officer, on seeing the armed man, drew his own licensed weapon and fired at the patient.
The 36-year-old dropped the firearm and was detained by the officer.
The injured officer was rushed for medical treatment and is currently warded at the San Fernando General Hospital in a stable condition, being treated for a wound to his pelvic region.
The scene was visited by a team of officers led by ASP Persad, and Inspector James.
