Police officers among 3 held for human trafficking

Police said two officers were detained in connection with human trafficking and gang-related activities.

According to a statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) on Tuesday, the two officers were among three held in connection with trafficking in persons and other gang-related activities during an anti-crime exercise carried out in the Central Division overnight.

Police said the officers, who are attached to the Central Division and live in the district, were held along with a Venezuelan national after their homes and lockers at the station were searched.

The operation included officers of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT), the Counter-Trafficking Unit, and a Special Task Force established by Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith, with human trafficking being part of their overall mandate.

Investigations are ongoing and further arrests are imminent, police said.
