Police seize high powered rifles, ammo in Belmont

There have been increased reports of gunfire being heard at night since the murder of 36-year-old shop keeper Lawrence Charles on Tuesday. 

As a result, a police operation was launched in the Belmont community on Friday morning. 

The operation saw the seizure of one sub-machine gun, two magazines for AR15 rifles, and six rounds of ammunition and while no one was held, police are expected to continue operations in the community over the weekend with the aim of maintaining law and order in the district. 

The operation was launched by ACP Nurse, and overseen by Snr Sup Moore, Sup Brandon John, Sup Rueben, and ASP Cumberbatch. Field operations were conducted by Sgt Alexander, Cpl Sookoo, Cpl Huggins, Cpl St Bernard, and Cpl Duncan, among others. 

The officers made their way to Beecham Coco Valley Road in Belmont. 

On Tuesday night Charles, the proprietor of the B and B’s Parlour, was shot dead. A total of 31 spent shells were found on the scene. 
Three suspects were subsequently detained while trying to flee the scene.
