Prison officer held trying to smuggle drugs in PoS jail

Police are investigating a report that a prison officer was caught attempting to smuggle marijuana into the Port of Spain Jail.

According to reports, the official, said to be of the rank of Prison Officer One and with over 15 years of service, was arrested on Saturday afternoon at the Fredrick Street Prison.

The drugs were allegedly found on his person during a routine search as he was about to enter the compound.

The police were notified and the officer was taken to the Belmont Police Station pending further inquiries.

Speaking with LoopTT, President of the Prison Officer’s Association Ceron Richards, said he was supportive of the arrests of prison officers who broke the law.

“Prison officers who breach the law should be dismissed from their duties and they should be subjected to the same laws and procedures as everyone else. We are at a point where hard working and honest prison officers are being targeted and their lives are on the line, so there is absolutely no tolerance for these bad apples. The association is happy that such people were held and removed from the Prison Service,” Richards said.
