Prison officer questioned after contraband items found

A prison officer is being questioned on allegations that he attempted to smuggle contraband items into the Port of Spain Prison on Wednesday.

The officer was held Wednesday morning during a routine search at the prison.

In his possession, his colleagues allegedly found and seized contraband items – namely cigarettes and two cellular phones.

As a result of this, and the fact that the officer had been detained for a similar infraction some time ago, officials from the Central Police Station in Port of Spain were notified.

The prison officer was questioned and is said to be aiding officers with their inquiries.

He has denied attempting to smuggle anything and said the items were his for his personal use.

More on this as it becomes available.
