Prison officer released in connection with contraband items

After being questioned on allegations that he attempted to smuggle contraband items into the Port of Spain Prison on Wednesday, the suspect, who is a prison officer, has been released.

The officer, who has ten years of service, was held on Wednesday morning during a routine search at the prison.

In his possession, his colleagues allegedly found and seized contraband items – namely three packs of cigarettes and two cellular phones.

As a result of this, and the fact that the officer had been detained for a similar infraction some time ago, officials from the Central Police Station in Port of Spain were notified.

The prison officer was questioned and is said to be aiding officers with their inquiries.

He has denied attempting to smuggle anything and said the items were his for his personal use. He was subsequently allowed to leave.

However, police noted that inquiries into this matter were ongoing, and as a result, they withheld the right to arrest the suspect once again should further evidential materials be brought up.

More on this as it becomes available.
