Prison officers in court for smuggling contraband
Two prison officers have appeared before an Arima Magistrate on allegations of attempting to bring contraband items into the prison.
The two accused, Shane Rambharose and Shaun Johnson appeared before Magistrate Debbie-Ann Bassaw in the Arima Magistrate's Court, on Tuesday.
They were charged under the Prisons Act.
The two men did not enter any pleas as the charges were laid indictably.
It was alleged that last Wednesday Rambharose was detained for being in possession of a cellphone and an open pack of cigarettes, in an area of the prison where such items are prohibited.
Johnson faced similar charges, namely that he had in his possession a cellphone, $1,500 in cash, and five packs of cigarettes.
Johnson also faced an additional charge of being in possession of 136 grammes of marijuana.
Both men were represented by defence attorney Nikolas Ali.
Bail was given at $40,000 for Rambharose and $80,000 for Johnson.
The matter was then adjourned and is expected to resume on May 1.
