Prisoners make dash for freedom, recaptured in minutes

Investigations have been launched into how two prisoners were able to escape from a prison transport van yesterday afternoon.

The two men, who were on their way back to the Remand Yard, Arouca Prison, made their escape around 2:30 pm on Monday.

However, due to the efforts of officers from the Eastern Division Task Force and the Air Support Unit, within 30 minutes they were both recaptured.

That said, police have launched an inquiry into exactly how the incident transpired.

Investigators were told that the two men were in the back of the vehicle when several loud noises were heard.

Initially, it was thought that the prisoners were just frustrated and hitting the vehicle.

However, after a particularly loud noise was heard, the two men escaped.

Police were told that it appeared as though the men kicked the door down.

However, this has drawn concern with the transportation of prisoners, so an investigation was launched to determine how their escape was possible, and if it was due to a fault in the vehicle.

The two men who escaped are both expected to face charges of escaping lawful custody and malicious damage to property.
