Inmates at the Remand Yard of the Golden Grove Prison rushed to the defence of a group of prison officers who were being attacked by other inmates on Wednesday.
According to reports, an agency went to the prison to sanitise cells from vermin and other insects at the facility.
Remandees of the North Wing were taken into the exercise yard between 10 and 11 am to allow cells to be sprayed when officers of the prison service's emergency response unit decided to conduct an impromptu search.
As a result, inmates began rioting, throwing objects at officers.
Four officers were injured in the fracas, however, the 11 who were involved were sent to the infirmary as a precautionary measure.
