St Augustine MP Prakash Ramadhar has confirmed that he will not be contesting the 2020 general election.

In a statement on Monday, Ramadhar said he took the decision some ago.

He expressed gratitude to his constituents for their support.

"For myself, I have not put myself forward as a candidate for any party nor have, I screened for anyone. This is a decision I had taken some time ago. As I look, this country is in need of service, in or out of office, and it is my intention to always do that which is right and proper to the benefit of my country today, and to prepare for a better future."

The St Augustine MP further thanked Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar for her support over the years.

"May I also thank the Leader of the Opposition and my colleagues, notwithstanding I did not belong to their party, I was treated as an independent within the ranks of the Opposition and for that I am very grateful."

He also congratulated those who have put forward their names as potential candidates for the upcoming general election.

"I congratulate you and thank you for your effort to serve this nation. At a time of high crisis Trinidad and Tobago needs the best of each and every one of us. I do hope and pray that those who are successful and those who may not be, may their ambition to serve not be diminished and that, we, the people of Trinidad and Tobago, get the best that you can possibly give."
