RBC resolving 'system error' after reports of ATMs down

RBC Royal Bank said a system error is being resolved after several customers reported being unable to withdraw money from ATM machines on Monday. 

An RBC spokesman said to LoopTT that due to this error some ATM and point-of-sale services may be interrupted.

“Due to a system error, some ATM and Point-of-Sale services might be periodically interrupted. We are aware of the problem and are working on a solution to restore these services as quickly as possible. We regret any inconvenience that this causes our clients," the spokesperson said.

On Monday, several customers complained of not being able to access money either through the ATM machines or Linx services. 

In a separate incident, four people were charged with fraud after they allegedly manipulated a 'glitch' in the ATM system which allowed them to withdraw money from ATM machines immediately after depositing an empty envelope and misstating the amount being deposited. 

A Whatsapp message was reportedly circulated outlining a system whereby customers could access 'free money' once they own an ATM card, by misstating the amount being deposited and then withdrawing money from the machine. 

However, the company clarified that the 'glitch' is, in fact, a crime which is punishable by law and said that it would be tracking down all persons who attempt to misuse the system this way. 

The company also assured that it continues to maintain the highest security and safety measures to ensure all customers are protected.
