Cabinet has declared the White-Fronted Capuchin and Red Howler Monkey as Environmentally Sensitive Species.

This was revealed by Agriculture, Land and Fisheries Minister, Clarence Rambharat on Friday.

The Minister said he took a note to Cabinet to protect the monkeys as the slaughter of the Red Howler Monkey has been something he has spoken about. He noted that in response to that February 9 post, several people suggested that consideration should also be given to the White-Fronted Capuchin.

Under the law, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) must engage in both a technical and consultative process. The EMA would be required to produce the formal proposal for public comment and administer this process.

"I thank all those persons who have already expressed their views," Rambharat said.
