Respect our women, UNC Women's Arm demands

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley likens women to golf courses in need of grooming as he makes his contribution to the Budget debate in Parliament October 12, 2017.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley likens women to golf courses in need of grooming as he makes his contribution to the Budget debate in Parliament October 12, 2017.

The Women’s Arm of the United National Congress (UNC) is demanding an apology from Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley over what it views as his continued disrespect towards women in T&T.

In a statement, the group expressed its displeasure with the Prime Minister’s latest description of women, likening them to golf courses which are in need of regular grooming to prevent them from becoming pastures.

Rowley made the comment during his contribution to debate on the budget in Parliament on Thursday, in defense of the Government’s decision to allocate $3 million for the upgrade of the Chaguaramas Golf Course.

The UNC Women’s Arm said the innuendos used by the Prime Minister are degrading to women and the sexist undertones are undeniable.

“The Prime Minister, instead addressing the many issues facing the country, including the thousands of persons who have been protesting and demonstrating against the budget, saw it fit to use his time to make distasteful comments.

Once more the UNC National Women’s Arm calls for an apology from the Prime Minister to all the women of Trinidad and Tobago, it will no longer be tolerated and it is very unacceptable to degrade women who are a significant section of our society.

The women of today are strong and courageous and we will stand up against sexism and the apparent misogynistic tendencies of this present Prime Minister.”

The UNC Women’s Arm added that it will continue to work towards the empowerment of women and continue to fight against atrocities meted out to them.

“Respect our women!” it demanded.
