Roosevelt Skerrit was sworn in as Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, today, hours after his Dominica Labour Party (DLP) was given a fourth consecutive term to lead the island.

President Charles Savarin issued the Oaths of Allegiance and Secrecy before a packed audience of Skerrit’s family, friends and supporters.

Skerrit thanked God and the people of Dominica for allowing him to govern the island for another five-year term.

He said: “I want to thank the people of Dominica for imposing their trust and confidence in me. I expect all the observers to say that there were free and fair elections in Dominica. Everybody who wanted to vote took part in the process. And, everybody was respectful of each other.”

“No one in this country was repealed from going to vote. Everybody voted for the candidate of his or her choice.”

“I want to congratulate all Dominicans for letting the world know we are a mature nation and we are a mature people. The world was watching us and I think we have confounded many interest groups around the world who felt that our political process would have descended into chaos.”

The full cabinet will be appointed next week.
