Rumours of destruction due to Tobago earthquake deemed 'fake news'

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) and the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) are refuting social media claims that Tobago has been devastated by an earthquake.

TEMA said it received reports about an earthquake affecting Tobago and its environs earlier on Thursday. However, it noted that the UWI Seismic Research Centre indicated this is inaccurate.

"There have been NO reports of any seismic activity in Tobago," TEMA said.

Meanwhile, the ODPM said photos have been circulating purporting to be damage associated with that incident.

The photos, according to the ODPM, were actually taken from the Kashmir, Pakistan earthquake. That 5.8 quake saw at least 38 killed and more than 300 injured when it struck on Tuesday.

"Please note that this information is false and that no significantly large event has occurred in Tobago," the ODPM stated.
