"Sandman" granted bail after murder conspiracy charge

Vaughn ‘Sandman’ Mieres has been placed on $450,000 bail on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder against Selwyn ‘Robocop’ Alexis in October 2014.

According to a report from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), 44-year-old Mieres, of Las Cuevas Village, Las Cuevas, appeared before Senior Magistrate Nanette Forde-John in the Port of Spain 8th Magistrates’ Court, on Monday.

The matter was postponed to Monday, October 2, 2017.

Mieres was charged by Sgt. Sherwin Conlioffe of the Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB)  last Saturday after advice was received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard, SC.

He was arrested after police executed a search warrant at his home for dangerous drugs between the hours of 11:00 pm on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 and 8:15 pm on Thursday, August 31, 2017.

During the search police allegedly seized US$5,330, TT$1,100 in cash and several pieces of camouflage clothing.

The exercise comprised officers from the Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau, Inter-Agency Task Force, Criminal Gang and Intelligence Unit, Financial Intelligence Bureau and the Strategic Services Agency.

The charge comes more than a year after Alexis was shot dead along with two others during a shootout on July 17, 2016, at his Enterprise, Chaguanas business place.

The Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB), Financial Investigations Branch (FIB), Criminal Gang Intelligence Unit (CGIU), Inter-Agency Task Force and the Strategic Services Agency (SSA) were all said to have been involved in the exercise.
