Sando cops catch 'thief' in five minutes

Police were in fine form on Thursday after nabbing an alleged thief just minutes after the incident was reported.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said in a release Friday that a 29-year-old woman had been assaulted and robbed of two handbags with a total of $40,000 cash in them in La Romaine on Thursday.

The woman had been sitting in her car at the Gulf City Mall car park around 12:55 pm on Thursday when the incident occurred.

However, after receiving the report, officers Ameer Ali and Sandeep Maharaj quickly visited the scene just five minutes after the call was received.

The officers spoke to the victim, who pointed out one of the suspects who was seen running towards a grey Hyundai Elantra car which was parked outside the mall. A second male suspect could be seen inside the car.

The police said the first suspect threw the two handbags into the car and then ran away, while the second suspect drove off in the vehicle, however, he could not drive fast enough to evade the officers.

After a short chase, the suspect was detained by the officers along Gulf View Link Road.

The driver, an 18-year-old Gasparillo man, was arrested and the two handbags and cash recovered.

Investigators say an arrest of the second suspect who escaped on foot is imminent.
