The San Fernando to Port of Spain Taxi Association has taken a decision to temporarily delay the implementation of a fare adjustment from $17 to $22.

The hike, which was expected to come in effect from June 1, will now take place from September 1.

Speaking with Loop News, President of the Association Hayden Whiskey said the decision was taken after consultations with key stakeholders.

"We are hopeful that this period would allow the travelling public to make the necessary budgetary adjustment, as we all struggle to cope with the challenges posed by the effects of COVID-19."

The current Public Health Regulations limit the number of passengers a licensed motor vehicle is permitted to transport.

The Association said it is therefore left with no alternative.

It said taxi drivers are no longer able to absorb the cost of financing their vehicles, as well as the high cost of maintaining their vehicles while being compliant with the regulations.
