Sergeant dies after setting himself on fire
Just over 24 hours after he lit himself on fire while sitting in his vehicle, retired police sergeant Gary Alexander died as a result of the injuries he sustained.
Alexander, 62, was being treated at the San Fernando General Hospital since the incident which occurred on Sunday. He succumbed to his injuries on Monday night in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.
According to police reports, while he retired in 2016, the police sergeant returned to service as a Special Reserve Police Officer last year and was based at the Oropouche police station.
Sources say around 10:20 am on Sunday, Alexander was at his home along Jebodhsingh Street, Avocat Village, when he got into an argument with his relatives.
He then left the home in his Kia Cerato, however, he returned a short while later.
He parked the vehicle on the roadway near the house and got a container with a flammable substance which he then ignited.
LoopTT was told that Alexander had previously threatened to burn down his house last year.
Investigations are still ongoing into this incident.
