'Smiley' charged with Williamsville farmer's murder
A Cunupia man was expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate on Wednesday charged with the kidnapping and subsequent murder of 19-year-old Leon Bebe which occurred on April 10.
22-year-old Shaquille Matas also known as ‘Smiley Rogers’ of Eccles Trace, Warrenville, Cunupia, was also charged with robbery with violence, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.
This followed advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard on April 24.
Bebe, a farmer of Poonah Road, Williamsville, made plans to purchase a Bull Finch bird from a man he knew.
Accompanied by a friend who also knew the suspect, both men went to Prizgar Road, San Juan. However, the transaction went awry when the victim’s friend was bundled into the trunk of a vehicle. Bebe jumped in his car and followed the vehicle to 7th Avenue, Malick, Barataria, where he was shot at by the assailants.
He later died at hospital.
Investigations were supervised by Insp Shaun Craig, acting Insp Christopher Fuentes and Sgt Belinda Sylvester of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region 2.
Matas was charged by PC Danny Moonsammy on April 24.
