Smoking weed in public is still illegal

Police are once again reminding citizens that while marijuana may be decriminalized for personal consumption at home, under the current amendments it remains illegal to smoke the drug in public.

This latest reminder comes after a 19-year-old man was fined TT$2,000 for smoking in public.

Tearnath Narine,  was held along the Chaguanas Main Road, Chaguanas, as he attempted to smoke a joint in full view of officers who were on patrol.

As a result, he was held and brought before Magistrate Nicholas Ali in the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court.

Narine, of Cunupia, plead guilty and did not waste the court’s time.

After various submissions from all parties, he was fined.

He was given three months to pay the money or face 30 days hard labour.
