Soca on the Seas offers scholarship to C'bbean students

One lucky second-year University student has the chance to win a scholarship to help advance their studies from Soca on the Seas.

Soca on the Seas is an annual Carnival event held aboard Royal Caribbean's Enchantment of the Seas. The event debuted last year when it was held for three days. In 2017, the event will be held over five days following the Miami Carnival. 

In a release, Soca on the Seas said they believe that students pursuing studies in the creative industries such as music, art, fashion and theatre should be supported in every way possible.

"The creative sector is a dynamic one that requires a developmental approach to ensuring its sustainability. This industry provides employment to thousands of people who have a passion and a vision for arts and culture. In this regard, we would like to contribute to the development of this industry through education and propelling young people to the next level of success is music, art, fashion and theatre," the release said.

The scholarship winner will receive a maximum of US$2000  and must be at the start of his/her second year.

The scholarship will be offered to tertiary level students pursuing Bachelor of Science Degrees in music, art, theatre, and fashion.

The scholarship is open to students who are citizens or citizens by descent of “full member” countries which comprise CARICOM: Antigua & Barbuda; Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Dominica; Grenada; Guyana; Haiti; Jamaica; Montserrat; Saint Kitts & Nevis; Saint Lucia; Saint Vincent & The Grenadines; Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

Proof of nationality must be submitted in the form of a copy of birth certificate or other relevant and recognised national document.

For eligibility, students must attain a GPA of at least 3.5 and provide a copy of their transcript and must submit an essay on the following subject matter: “How Can the Creative Industries Impact Meaningfully In Economic Diversification”.

The essay must be a minimum of 2,500 words and a maximum of 3,000 words.

Ten essays will be shortlisted and the writers of these ten essays must submit a video recording (Maximum five minutes long) articulating their essay.

A panel of judges will assess and award the scholarship to one student.

The winner will be announced on the Soca On the Seas Cruise on October 12.
