Son of superintendent among two charged for illegal firearm

The 26-year-old son of a superintendent of police was expected to appear before a Sangre Grande magistrate on Monday on firearm and ammunition charges.

The suspect was one of two people, including a 36-year-old man from Laventille, arrested on Friday after the illegal weapon was allegedly found in their vehicle.

According to police reports, a team of officers from the Sangre Grande CID, led by Inspector Lutchman and Cpl Castillo, were conducting mobile exercises along Foster Road, Sangre Grande, when around 12:30 pm on Friday, they had cause to intercept a Mercedes Benz.

The driver, police said, began acting in a suspicious manner after seeing the police.

A search of the vehicle was conducted and a Ruger 9mm pistol along with 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition was allegedly found in the vehicle.

As a result of the find, the two were taken into custody.
