UPDATE: Kidnapped South businessman returned to family
Relatives of kidnapped South businessman Gregory Laing have confirmed that he has been released and returned to his family.
According to a statement by relatives, Laing, who owns Puff n' Stuff Bakery in San Fernando, was returned to his family on Thursday afternoon after he was kidnapped on Thursday morning outside of his bakery.
"He has been released. Thank you for all the concern, well wishes and prayers. The family is truly grateful," a relative said.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) also confirmed via Twitter that Laing was safely located by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit just after 5:00 pm.
According to reports, Laing was opening up the bakery in San Fernando when he was abducted.
ASP (Ag.) Public Information Officer Michael Pierre said to LoopTT that an employee reportedly visited the business place around 4:00 am on Thursday morning and saw Laing's car and phone at the location, but Laing was nowhere to be seen.
His relatives were then contacted and the police notified.
The family was reportedly contacted and a ransom demanded for his return.
Officers made a search of the Beetham and Laventille areas after the call was traced to a location near to Port of Spain.
The Anti-Kidnapping Unit in conjunction with the San Fernando CID and the Mon Repos Police Station are investigating.
