St Joseph man dies five days after arson attack on his home
After fighting for his life for five days, 39-year-old Vishnu Pooran has died.
Pooran of Bangladesh, St Joseph, died at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex on Thursday afternoon after he suffered second degree and third degree burns to his body when an unknown person set fire to his home.
An autopsy is expected to be performed today to determine the official cause of death.
Police were told that at 3 am on Saturday, Pooran was asleep at his home when he was awakened by a loud explosion.
He soon realised his home was on fire, and he quickly forced his way out of the home through the front door.
It was during the escape that he suffered the burns.
An alarm was raised and residents of the area rushed to Pooran’s aid and contained the blaze to the front of the home.
The police and emergency health services were notified and the injured man was rushed to the Mt Hope Hospital.
CCTV footage of the incident captured showed a masked man planting an item - which police believe started the fire - at Pooran’s door and fleeing the scene.
Police said this incident is linked to several other reports of criminality in the area over the past few weeks, which included recent shootings.
As a result, patrols are expected to be increased in the area.
More on this as it becomes available.
