Suspect in custody for murder of Chinese business owner

A 24-year-old man is currently in police custody for the murder of Chinese businessman Chen Zhi Zhong.

The suspect was held on Friday morning at an abandoned house in Cross Crossing, San Fernando, during a police exercise spearheaded by Snr Sup Zamsheed Mohammed.

The exercise also involved a team of officers including Inspector Gajadhar, Sgt Ifill, Sgt Dinoo, Cpl Pulchan, Cpl Bacchus, and Cpl Narine, among several other officers attached to the San Fernando CID and Southern Division Task Force.

The suspect is expected to be questioned in relation to Zhong’s murder, as well as other shooting incidents in the district.

Zhong was shot dead on Sunday at his business place, Karvill Supermarket Ltd, along Manahambre Road, Princes Town.

According to police reports, Zhong was standing behind the counter of his supermarket, when the assailant walked into the store at about 12.12 pm last Sunday.

The man called out to Zhong, and then leaned in over towards him at the counter, and it appeared as though the man told the 24-year-old victim something.

Then without warning, the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot Zhong in the throat and the face.

He then fled the scene in a waiting vehicle.

Zhong died while receiving treatment at the Princes Town District Hospital

The incident was captured by CCTV cameras set up in the supermarket.
