Suspect held after Arouca robbery

One man is in police custody following a robbery yesterday in Arouca.

Police were told that at about 12:15pm, a man entered a business along Henry Street, Arouca, under the pretense of being a customer.

He pulled out a firearm and announced a hold up and relieved the proprietor of a quantity of cash and valuables. However, as he tried to exit the building, the bandit encountered difficulties in opening the door.

The gunman demanded that one of the victims open the door and there was a struggle which got the attention of an off-duty police officer who was nearby at the time.

The officer notified his colleagues at the Arouca Police Station and kept tabs on the man.

The suspect was eventually held at a short distance away at Railway Road.

A team of officers from the Northern Division Task Force (Area Central) led by PC Alexis, responded and detained the suspect, who surrendered without incident. The stolen items were recovered. He was identified and taken into custody.

A .38mm firearm loaded with four rounds of ammunition was recovered.

PC Alexis is continuing inquiries.
