Suspect held in Point Fortin high-speed chase appears in court

The man who was held after a high-speed chase in Point Fortin has been sentenced to 18 months hard labour.

Johnny Jerome, 38, of Chatham, Point Fortin was arrested on Monday night during a police exercise which saw an estimated $1.4 million in marijuana being seized.

Jerome, however, was only charged with the offence of trafficking 2.1 kilogrammes of the drug, as this was the quantity found in his truck at the time.

The drug, police said, had a value of $21,000.

Jerome appeared before Point Fortin Magistrate Alicia Chankar and plead guilty to the offence.

The court was informed that the 38-year-old only had a pending matter for firearm possession under his name.

Jerome apologised for having the drugs but told the court he was just trying to make some money as his house had burnt down recently.

After further submissions, Jerome was sentenced.
