Suspect injured after robbing police officer; police on lookout

Police are on the lookout for an injured suspect who allegedly robbed an off-duty police officer.

Loop News was told that Southern Division police were searching for the suspect following a report of an exchange of gunfire involving a police officer who is currently on vacation.

The officer, who is a police constable, told investigators that around 3.30 pm on Tuesday afternoon he was standing along Aileen Avenue, Palmiste, when he was approached by an armed assailant.

The man pulled out a firearm and relieved the officer of $5,000 in cash, as well as a quantity of jewellery which had an estimated value of $14,000.

However, while the officer was handing over his valuables, he was able to secure his licensed firearm and confronted his attacker.

The robber, on seeing the gun, attempted to run and allegedly opened fire on the lawman. However the constable returned fire and the assailant ran into a nearby vehicle.

Luckily the officer was not injured. He notified his colleagues and an all-points bulletin was issued.

The vehicle was later found abandoned at Cipero Road near San Fernando.

There were bloodstains in the driver’s seat and bullet holes to the front door, leaving investigators to believe that the suspect had been shot.

Medical institutions have been advised to be on the lookout and report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.

ASP Mohammed is continuing inquiries.

More on this as it becomes available.
