Suspect shot by police in mobile phone sting operation
One individual was shot during a confrontation with police on Wednesday night during a sting operation involving a stolen mobile phone.
The incident took place around 8:00 pm along Hosein Street, Broadway, Arima.
LoopTT was told that police had orchestrated a sting operation after receiving intelligence that a phone had been stolen and was being resold.
The victim told police that he had been robbed of his phone along Blanchisseuse Road at about 4.15 pm that day.
When he called the number, a man answered and demanded that the victim bring $800 in exchange for the phone.
The police were notified, and officers were there to observe and record the exchange in Arima.
When this was completed, the officers moved in and confronted the two men.
One of the suspects pulled out a revolver, which caused one of the responding officers to draw his licensed firearm, shooting the ‘gunman’ in the left leg.
The suspect, a 17-year-old from Calvary Hill, Arima, dropped the weapon and surrendered.
The other man, a 20-year-old also from Calvary Hill, was surrendered and detained.
