SWRHA clarifies circumstances on death at SFGH

The South-West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) said it has completed an internal investigation into the death of a patient at the San Fernando General Hospital which was reported in July 2019.

In a statement issued May 24, 2020, the SWRHA said it "takes note of a re-publication of a Letter to the Editor, entitled “Suffering, death at Sando Hospital” on Sunday May 24, 2020 in the Sunday Newsday newspaper. The letter was first published in the said newspapers on July 21, 2019."

"Following the first publication of the article on July 21, 2019, the Authority immediately undertook a thorough internal investigation, which included a full disclosure to the relatives of the deceased patient."

"The disclosure of the investigation findings with the relatives, effectively clarified the public perception raised and brought a common understanding of the facts surrounding the care of the patient in his last illness."

The SWRHA said officials of the Authority up until recently, have kept in contact with relatives of the deceased patient.

"The SWRHA continues to invite our valued patients and clients to contact our Customer Service Centre at 87-SWRHA (877-9742), for any matter in relations to healthcare."
