No bail for taxi driver charged with assaulting officer

A 26-year-old taxi driver, who allegedly threw a substance into the eyes of a police officer who was trying to arrest her, was denied bail.

Dimple Walters, of Barataria, appeared before Senior Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan in the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court, charged with the offences of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; common assault; and using obscene language in a public place to the annoyance of others.

Sgt Noel of the Caroni Police Station was the complainant (charging officer) in this matter.

Walters was represented by attorney Shiva Boodoo.

The State was represented by police prosecutor Sgt Sooden.

The incident allegedly took place at Flirt Bar in Cunupia on October 11.

The court was informed that the officer involved in this incident was still warded at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.

A bail application was made, however, the State requested time for a background tracing on the accused to be secured.

After further submissions, the matter was adjourned.

Walters remained in custody.

The matter is expected to be recalled on Thursday.

More on this as it becomes available.
