Teen fined for firearm and marijuana possession

An 18-year-old boy has been fined $17,500 on allegations of possession of a loaded firearm, and possession of marijuana.

The teen, of Claxton Bay, was fined by Magistrate Nikolas Ali at the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court at the close of the trial.

He was represented by attorney Shiva Boodoo.

PC Ali was the charging officer in this matter.

Sgt Gangoo represented the interests of the State as the police prosecutor.

The 18-year-old plead guilty to the offence.

The court was told he was held on the morning of July 17 during a police exercise.

A revolver, one round of ammunition, and 103 grammes of marijuana were found.

Boodoo pleaded for leniency for his client, noting that he had not wasted the court’s time and plead guilty on the first opportunity accepting his responsibility.

He noted that his client had dropped out of school, and had fallen into bad company, but was committed to turning his life around.

After further submissions, the teen was fined.

Failure to pay the fines within the requisite period could result in a default of three months hard labour.
